Category Definitions

Accessory Brochure: Brochure showing accessories available for the year's models. Published annually by each manufacturer. Some are given to customers and some are created specifically for dealers and salesmen.

Article: Magazine article covering a specific model of car.

Blotter: Dealer or Salesman's giveaway item. Used to blot ink from fountain pens. Usually has picture of new model car on one side.

Book: Sales literature or independent review of cars. Can be hard or soft bound. Has more pictures and content than a booklet. The dimensions are usually 8.5" x 11".

Booklet: Sales literature or independent review of cars. Can be hard or soft bound. Generally contains less pictures and content than a book. Small dimensions.

Brochure: Sales literature with multiple pages bound by staples and opens like a book. The number of pages will vary. The word "Prestige" is used to describe a more lavish catalog, the largest one issued for the year. Brochures will show at least some, if not all of the following: beautiful illustrations of all models if full line, or close-up views features, options, accessories, engines, colors and complete specifications.

Calendar: Salesman's giveaway to customers. Usually shows twelve pictures of cars, one for each month.

Card: Printed on cardstock and used for a variety of purposes, which include: business cards, dash cards, sales advertisement cards, etc. Contest

Checks: Salesman's rewards checks for improving sales. Salesmen exchanged these checks for prizes.

Counter Display: Printed on cardstock. Usually includes a cardstock brace to allow it to stand vertically on a flat surface.

Drawing: Line renderings of car model styles. Generally on a single sheet of paper. We are not entirely sure why they were circulated.

Foldout: Unfolds like a road map. It can unfolded once or several times. The size can vary up to a large poster size. The dimensions listed in our catalog is for the closed dimensions. Shows at least some, if not all of the following: beautiful illustrations of all models if full line, or close-up views of features, options, accessories, engines, colors and complete specifications.

Invitation: Generally printed on cardstock, often formal in design. Usually mailed to customers to invite them to test drive a new model of car.

Magazine Ad: Advertisement cutouts from magazines. Magazine Article: Cutouts of magazine articles. Generally, the subject of the article is a general review of the features of the car with pictures.

Mailer: Folder or brochure specifically designed for mailing to current or prospective customers. Newspaper Ad: Advertisement cutouts from newspapers.

Paint Chip: Accurately depicts the colors available for the model year. One sheet will have samples of paint chips for the entire set of colors, with the code of each color typed underneath. Photo Album: Bound book containing assorted photographs, usually mounted on thick paper or canvas.

Portfolio: Sales piece which includes an envelope and a number of individual plates each containing a detailed image of a car model. The cover generally looks like a brochure, but opens to reveal pockets holding the plates.

Poster: For use by dealer only in showroom not available to general public. Press Release: Typewritten information about the release of a new model and it's features. Generally on 8.5" x 11" paper.

Program: Handed out at national meetings of car dealers. Generally formal in design and can be embellished with tassels or cloth borders. Includes the itinerary, some additional information, articles and images.

Pull Out Chart: Has an outer sleeve with an inner card. Generally contains comparison information between models of two or more manufacturers. Information is found by sliding the inner sleeve until it matches with the desired data set.

Roto Paper: Manufacturer advertisement in newspaper format. Sales Bulletin: Periodic bulletins prepared by car manufacturers and sent to existing or prospective customers.

Sales Letter: Original letter sent to existing or prospective clients, usually signed by the sales manager of a dealership, personally inviting them to see or test drive new model cars.

Sales Magazine: Periodic literature that usually contains some general interest articles plus specific articles about that years models of cars. Single

Sheet: A single sheet that can be printed on one side or both sides and is usually about 8 1/2 x 11 in size although the size can vary. Contains pictures and information about a model of car.

Stereoview: Stereopticon slide creating a three dimensional view of a specific car model.

Tally Sheet (Bridge): Dealer or salesman's giveaway. Tally sheet for the card game bridge. Generally also includes the name of the car manufacturer and the contact information of the dealer.

Visor: Dealer or salesman's giveaway. Generally also includes the name of the car manufacturer and the contact information of the dealer.

Dealer Items Color / Upholstery Book: Dealer item. Shows all colors and upholstery samples for all models of that year.

Dealer Ad Proof: Proof sheets for magazine ads, newspaper ads, or dealer service ads. Proof sheets are made by advertising companies for the manufacturer. Each book has series of ads on tissue paper or cardstock, usually with a space left open for the dealer's address.

Dealer Brochure: Made by manufactures for dealer and salesman information. Generally presented as an advertisement instead of simply lists of information.

Dealer Bulletin: Periodic information presented to dealerships and salesmen by the manufacturers. Often includes comparisons of their models versus the competition or updated information on new features in the fleet. Often there are holes punched by the dealer to facilitate placement in a binder.

Dealer Letter: Letters issued by the manufacturer to the dealers for changes in policy, updates on inventory, or mechanical changes in fleet.

Dealer News: Manufacturers newspaper to update dealers on a variety of issues that affect them.

Employee Magazine: Magazine for the employees produced by the parent company.

Installation Manual: Dealer item. Includes explanations and drawings for the installation of a specific accessory or part.

Press Kit: Dealer advertising item that usually generally contains typed press releases on 8.5" x 11" sheets of paper with 8" x 10" glossy black and white photographs of some car models and features.

Salesman's Foldout: For use by salesmen in dealership. Designed to fold open to display complete mechanical specifications, all options, features, accessories, body details, etc. When closed, it generally fits into the salesman's pocket.

Salesman's Handbook: For use by salesmen in dealership. Usually hardbound and containing many pages of photos, complete mechanical specifications, all options, features, accessories, body details, etc.

Photographs Original Photograph: Usually measure 8"x 10". Original black and white photograph of vehicle models. These are often photos from manufacturer archives or Hollywood studio shots. Please note the condition listed in the catalog, since it can vary depending on how they were stored over time. These photos are either loose or mounted on canvas or paper backing. These photos are images of the cars often not found in any brochures.

Photo Reprint: All measure 8" x 10". The condition of these photos is always new since we have had them professionally reprinted from the original negatives that we own. It is interesting to note that some of these negatives are actually made out of glass, and have the same dimensions of the photo itself. These photos are images of the cars often not found in any brochures.

Owner's Manuals Owner's Manual: This is the booklet that comes with all new cars and is kept in the glove box. It contains much useful information, such as maintenance and complete operation of the car.

Parts Books Parts Book: Can cover the body, chassis or both. All body and chassis parts are fully illustrated and described, including factory part numbers. Some parts books will cover multiple years. Parts books are very useful as they include complete interchangeable parts information for several years as noted.

Shop Manuals Shop Manual: Includes complete repair information, full illustrated. Sections covered include engine, transmission, electrical, lubrication etc.

Corporate Items Annual Report: Stockholder's report issued the by the manufacturers summarizing the economic performance of the company for the past year. Usually shows pictures of cars for the next year.

Stock Certificate: Actual stock certificates issued by the manufacturer. Stockholder's Report: Periodic report issued by the manufacturers to the stockholders that generally covers information other than the annual report. This could include information on new models, new accessories, new technology or sales performance information.
